Onam festival is celebrated to commemorate the homecoming of our beloved King Mahabali. this festival dates back to ancient history when Lord Vishnu incarnated in a form of a small brahmin child Vamanan , one of the incarnation from the 10 forms(Dasavatharam) and visited King Mahabali on the day of the yagna puja in his kingdom.Vamanan asked for 3 feet land as alms which the king happily agreed to give him. The small brahmin child grew up huge in size and started to measure and with two feet he claimed Heaven and earth. And for the third feet the king offered his head, but with one condition that he should be allowed to meet his people once in a year. Onam is celebrated every year of Malayalam month chingam , believing that King Mahabali will visit each and every homes. The main highlight of onam festival is to wear new clothes, make Pookalam also known as rangoli with flowers, worshipping of Thrikakarappan/Onathappan that symbolizes vamana, the ona Sadhya and pulikali that happens on the 4th day after thiruvonam. Onam is celebrated with pomp and splendor.
